The Bluetooth side of things can be used for all kinds of BLE connectivity projects and devices. It’s great for when you only have a single USB port (a.k.a. Raspberry Pi A+ or BeagleBone) as there’s no need for a hub to add both types of wireless. Drivers for Bluetooth modules are built into Windows 10+ so you do not need to install any software or download anything. Just plug it in and let Windows auto-install the BT driver, it may take a few minutes! For Linux, a kernel module install is required, but given that the RTL8723BU is the only chipset available, it wasn’t too bad. A tutorial is available here – we ran it on a Raspberry Pi Zero and it worked, just took a while to complete the install. Technical Details The Realtek RTL8723BU is an 802.11bgn 2.4G single-chip that integrates Wireless LAN (WLAN) and a network USB interface (USB 1.0/1.1/2.0 compatible) controller with integrated Bluetooth 2.1/3.0/4.0 controller. It combines a WLAN MAC, a 1T1R capable WLAN baseband, and WLAN RF in a single chip.
